My preferred genre is abstract expressionism and I approach my art-making using loosely applied blocks of colour and line, and build on this with multiple layering of shape, line, colour and symbol. In particular, the way colours work together, in proximity, and across the whole canvas, persistently intrigues me. By questioning the meaning behind each colour, form and mark, I seek to understand the relationships between each area of the painting, allowing all parts to speak. Through encouraging the subconscious to emerge spontaneously with little restriction results in a process that is intuitive, and enables the painting to determine its own direction. This manner of working is simultaneously both energising and exhausting yet when complete I feel nurtured and very present.
