I visited Central Australia 16 years ago and the memory of it still remains vivid in my mind. I’ve painted this encounter now, using the bright colours of the Uluru and Kata Juta areas. These are monumental rock features and are Australian icons. My painting approach is abstract in style…it’s almost impossible to express the spirit and wondrous nature of these edifices any other way. The colour is high and vivid with reds, oranges and pinks and a splash of yellow. I’ve indicated features such as sky with a bright blue and remnant trees and small rocks in dark tones. My memory evokes feelings of appreciation of the grandeur of these places….I’m trying to capture the essence, the spirit of Uluru and the surrounding landscape. Hope those who have experienced this part of Australia (and those who would like to) can somehow connect with the essence of what I’ve painted.
Today I’ve started a painting that I’d like to enter into the Redlands Art Show. Taking my inspiration from the little bay island, Coochiemudlo, I’ve painted the initial layer of bright colour. I’ve visited this island many times…it’s a short ferry ride from Victoria Point. Coochie is a tiny island and easy to walk around, and surprisingly diverse in natural habitats for its size. I’m taking my idea from the western side facing the mainland where the cliffs and rocks are red pumice stone, and the water is clear. There’s often a lovely bright light on this side of the island and I’m aiming to capture that brightness and the vivid colour that accompanies it.
This dramatic and vibrant artwork is the latest from my studio. The title “Dark mountain, red sky” is evocative of restless power and drama, and the colourful primary hues exude a joyous feeling. There’s a lot of energy and movement in this work and I certainly enjoyed it’s making. Hope you do too! It’s priced at $530(AUD)…that’s Australian dollars.
This month I’ll talk about an abstraction I made last year titled “Magenta meets yellow and orange”. This painting has a great sense of immediacy about it, yet the colours and their placement were carefully considered. I wanted to make a juxtaposition of the orange and magenta, yet allow the yellow to be a central theme. It’s almost like a collision of these colours, and this is the result! I knew the background could not be strongly present, taking a very subdued presence, and letting the vibrant magenta, yellow, and orange voice be heard. The painting needed a few extra marks of black to lift it from being a red focused energy, and so I used a couple of simple gestures to balance the hot energy. A few areas of blended colour were employed to break the large orange area in particular. I found this painting to be a lot of fun to make, and in a way it seemed to create itself, or at least had it’s own momentum. Things worked very easily, and I was very happy at completion…and still am! Hope you enjoy this as much as I do.
