“Reef light” is the latest work from my studio. In this small painting I’m working to evoke the spirit, the essence of being underwater on the Barrier reef. The colour expresses this experience in the lower light of night time. Some lighter colour allude to filtered light through the water. Use your imagination to feel as if you’re floating through a coral cave and enjoying the moody colours and energy of the underwater reef. This piece comes from my memory of swimming on the reef and other underwater experiences. It’s priced at $370(AUD) and is 30x30cm. The medium is acrylic paint on stretched linen.

This week I’ve completed a painting titled “Oceans’ embrace”. As Australians we seem to be attracted to, and love, the ocean. I don’t swim regularly, but have enjoyed the healing power and attraction of our oceans. It is an overwhelming experience of natures’ power and in this work I’ve depicted that experience….the colour and movement of the water, the reflected light. Small spots of gold have been added to highlight the joy and vibrance of the whole imaginary scene. This painting is about feeling the mood of the ocean and being immersed in its waters.

I’ve actually made some time to paint in the last week and thought I’d keep you posted with pics showing the works I’m painting at the moment. They are still in progress and I’m not sure how they’ll look finished but nearly there, I think. The blue and white painting is, I feel, quite oceanic in atmosphere…and I’m pursuing the idea of a dancing ocean. The other work which is mainly white and yellow, is about contrast of colours…brighter colours being muted somewhat by the whites and greys. It seems to be indicating the idea of division..perhaps on several levels of understanding. I’ll see how it all travels along over the next week or so. Here’s the pics!
I haven’t been in the studio much lately…my commitment to my garden has been ongoing (and exciting). But I’ve been working on this painting, which is purely abstract in concept without any references to landscape. It’s about colour…seeing how whites and greys look near a bright yellow and pink. The grey tones mute the presence of the brighter hues but also act as a contrast…it feels almost cloud like. Don’t think it’s finished yet,..we’ll see!
This year has been very hectic, for many different reasons. I’ve recently caught up with my creativity again and have been making some new art! Today I photographed one I’ve completed so I’ll show you. It’s titled “Little boat harbour” and depicts the energy and light of Australian coastal boat harbours…I was reminded of these experiences; that of visiting coastal towns on various travels, and loving the quality of light on the water. The colours are heightened and bright; the sun is high. Perhaps I’m thinking about this as it’s winter here, and a bit chilly! This month I’m pleased to show you a work from a favourite Australian artist, Aida Tomescu. The work is titled “Argint” and was painted in 2004. Tomescu likes to work in multiple layers, revealing small areas of underlying painting and drawing. Her paintings are complex and rich, ripe with personal meaning and texture. The paint is often applied using her gloved hands and this makes for a tactile surface and a directness of application. Quite often edges also reveal themselves, and that is the case in this painting “Argint“. There are layers of thickly applied oil paint and edges and corners reveal what’s beneath. Tomescu employs large areas of single hue to create an impactful work…one becomes fascinated with the textured quality of such a large surface of single colour. Some people like to refer to Tomescu as a “colourist”, yet she prefers to speak of a much wider collection of pursuits, and says that the painting continually creates it’s own direction as she proceeds. This painting is large, 184x139cm. It is something that I can “dive” into, and feel a relationship with colour, light and texture.

The beginnings of two new series of artworks are starting to emerge….”Alchemy” and “Remembrance” are the titles of these upcoming series of abstractions. I’ll keep you all posted in the coming days and weeks about these ideas and paintings!
At last I’ve completed “Another underwater world; a cenotes, Yucatan”. I wanted to capture the mood and spirit of these places….I’ve never visited the Yucatan but have seen images online of these amazing fresh water pools, created by water flowing through limestone. The pools are crystal clear and were revered by the original indigenous peoples of the peninsula. I felt very moved to paint my own impression of such places, and am pleased with the result. I hope it inspires viewers to appreciate the beauty we have on this planet, and to respect these special places….maybe to even visit and experience their pristine nature. In fact, what I like my art to do is to help people connect with the natural world and deepen their appreciation of it…this is one of my personal aspirations.
