From the studio

The artwork “This big land” has been completed this week, and I’m pleased with the final result. It was an evolving work comprising many layers, and I continued with it for more than a month till I was satisfied the painting was resolved. The inspiration for its’ creation is a combination of experience and memory of various diverse Australian landscapes: Central Australian desert, rural drought, pink mists and sunsets. These things coalesce into a work which is about the spirit of the land, and its’ vast ancient presence beyond the narrow coastal strip. A great beauty is found in that expansive harshness, both unsettling yet alluring at the same time. The land speaks of a timeless presence stretching back to ancient roots and beginnings, and I’m grateful for being part of this powerful place.

This artwork is acrylic paint on stretched canvas. Please enjoy “This big land”.

Studio today

A glimpse of what’s happening in my studio this week…still working on a couple of pieces, and enjoying the pastel hues (although that can change at any time, when I begin to balance colours and tones!). Thought I pop this image up for the viewer!

Pastel coloured abstract paintings in my art studio

Newly painted in the studio

I’ve been making a bit more time for myself to be creative in my studio and have just yesterday completed 2 new paintings. It’s a relief to get back into art making again as I’ve been devoting a lot of time to the gardening project, but sometimes the need for art creation comes to the fore and I follow my instincts! The new paintings reference my love for the natural world and my experience of it, but are also very abstracted in format. It’s more about feeling the place and creating an abstract impression of this…called expressionism actually! Paint marks made on the canvas are significant in all my work…they point to abstracted ideas of objects, people etc. but also serve to lead the eye on a journey across the paintings, and to linger in areas that can be explored more. One artwork is a small forest painting, the other a beach. Both are refreshing and sustaining places to visit. “Forest wandering 1” is priced at $340 and is 40x30cm in size; the other is titled “Beach stroll”, a much larger painting, and priced at $995. Its’ size is 92x60cm. Both were a great joy to paint! Please reach me on my contact page if you’re interested in making a purchase.

Two in progress in the studio

I’ve actually made some time to paint in the last week and thought I’d keep you posted with pics showing the works I’m painting at the moment. They are still in progress and I’m not sure how they’ll look finished but nearly there, I think. The blue and white painting is, I feel, quite oceanic in atmosphere…and I’m pursuing the idea of a dancing ocean. The other work which is mainly white and yellow, is about contrast of colours…brighter colours being muted somewhat by the whites and greys. It seems to be indicating the idea of division..perhaps on several levels of understanding. I’ll see how it all travels along over the next week or so. Here’s the pics!

Studio work

I haven’t been in the studio much lately…my commitment to my garden has been ongoing (and exciting). But I’ve been working on this painting, which is purely abstract in concept without any references to landscape. It’s about colour…seeing how whites and greys look near a bright yellow and pink. The grey tones mute the presence of the brighter hues but also act as a contrast…it feels almost cloud like. Don’t think it’s finished yet,..we’ll see!

New in the studio

Last painting for 2017

Finished this painting just before New Years Eve last week….“Sunrise: mountain” is a collection of ideas/inspirations from nearly mornings on the mountain. Colours can be brilliant, with trees aglow; there is a lovely quality of light. A diversity of painting techniques were employed here: spray paint, dribbles, textured painterly sections. I’ve heightened the hues vibrancy to increase the impact of the work…it’s about memories, what I’ve seen and experienced.

Two new works on my Gallery 1 page

I’ve added my two latest works to my Gallery 1 page. You can view them here.

Another little painting

Finished another painting yesterday…a very tiny one. I’ve called it “Profusion”, as an expression of the abundant growth here on the mountain. There’s a lot of movement in this work, and this also expresses the energy of growth. The red/orange background colour is very similar to the colour of the earth in my garden. Greens and yellows echo the local plant life which has a grand lushness to it.

Art from the mountain

I’ve been creating some more artworks today, taking some time out from the garden. A newly finished piece is “Green retreat”, expressing the mood and sense of “green” overwhelm that living here on the mountain induces. The presence of the lush local rainforest and garden landscape is all surrounding…its green abundance and cicadas singing outside is the ever present energy. Pinks and yellows act as contrast and are a nod to the flowering trees and plants that accompany the green.

This painting is acrylic paint on stretched linen and is ready to hang. It measures 76×76 cm. and is priced at $1070 AUD. Enquires can be made here.
